[Chief of General Staff of Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, heads a military delegation to Azerbaijan, in a visit which is seen by experts as Islamic Republic’s attempt to sidestep US military sanctions by getting closer to Azerbaijan.
Reporter: Chief of General Staff of Armed Forces of Iran starts his trip to Azerbaijan, heading a high-ranking military delegation. Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri entered Baku on an official invitation of Zakir Hasanov, Azerbaijan’s defense minister. In his two-day stay in this country, he will have meetings and negotiations with highest-ranking political and military officials of this country, including Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev, minister of defense, prime minister and speaker of national parliament of this country.
Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri: Given the historical relations that the two countries have and the cooperation they had in different issues, as well as the fact that these cooperations must develop, it was necessary to have this trip at this level. This is the first time that this trip is taking place at this level, and it shows the closeness of positions and deep cooperation between the two countries which will further develop in military and defense aspects.
Reporter: Experts in strategic affairs hold that the trip of Chief of General Staff of Armed Forces is particularly significant, given the role and impact of armed forces of both countries in stability and security of the region – especially in the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus.
Reporter: Bilateral military relations, joint border cooperation, and regional developments are among the main talking points of a high-ranking military delegation of the Islamic Republic with their counterparts in Azerbaijan.
