CAATSA restricts China and Russia

Anchor: In a new measure, the US targeted Chinese defense sector with sanctions for buying arms including fighter jets and surface-to-air missiles from Russia. In continuation of economic and political sanctions against its allies, Washington implemented CAATSA [Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanction Act], putting sanctions on tens of Chinese and Russians entities and individuals. According to Heather Nauert, spokesperson of US Department of State, Department of developing equipment, EDD of Chinese Defense Ministry, and its director Li Shangfu were put under sanction for buying Sukhoi-35 fighter jets and S-400 missile system from Russia, as well as supporting Syria. Washington also added 33 military and defense individuals and entities of Russia to its sanctions list. In reaction to new US sanctions, Russia and China called these measures obvious violation of international laws and unfair competition. Deputy foreign minister of Russia called new US sanctions ‘foolish play with fire” which threatens the stability of the world. Sergei Liakov called daily lists of US against Russia ridiculous, saying these threats to put pressure on Moscow have had no desirable outcomes for the enemies. Beijing too warned Washington that if it doesn’t correct its mistakes, it should expect the fallouts. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said US measures will have no impacts on the strategic cooperation of China and Russia, and this cooperation will increase.
