Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani
[Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan recently signed the Convention of the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, establishing a formula for dividing up its resources. Many Iranians, angry with the result, see this as “selling off” the Caspian Sea to Russians. Whereas Iran used to own 50% of the Caspian, it is now said to own less than 15%.]
Hassan Rouhani: I do urge it here that presidents of five coastal countries of the Caspian Sea signed the document today. But finalizing this document must go through legal procedures, and it must be signed by Iranian parliament. And I am very happy today that under current circumstances, all coastal countries of the Caspian Sea can use it more and better than before.
