In this interview conducted by the distinguished Washington Post columnist David Ignatius on July 26th 2017, veteran US Senator Bob Corker (Rep – Tennessee) reiterates that the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear deal, between Iran and the P5+1 nations was never officially signed, stating that it is a “political understanding” rather than a formal deal. Such an informal status would mean that the agreement is officially non-binding on the parties involved.
In response to Ignatius’ question on the issue, Corker says, “So here’s what happened: the president [Obama, at the time] chose to go directly to the UN Security Council through executive privilege to put in place this agreement. It’s an agreement that’s never been signed. It is an agreement that is a political understanding. And with that, the president waived sanctions that had been put in place through various iterations, ad infinitum items, to put this agreement in place.”
