Regime news agency releases embarrassing footage of contradictory Rouhani speeches

In the run-up to the Iranian presidential election, the Fars News Agency, closely affiliated to the regime, released contradictory speeches by the incumbent President, Hassan Rouhani, one on improvements in the Iranian economy and the other on an economic downturn. The release of the speeches is believed to be an indirect attempt by the regime to influence the public against voting for Rouhani.

In the first clip, from a speech by Rouhani  at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on Saturday, September 6, 2014, he is heard saying, “Here, from the Imam Reza Shrine, I would like to declare it to the people of Iran that we have, fortunately, passed [left behind] the period of recession.”

In the second speech, delivered to a large crowd of supporters on Sunday, July 17, 2016, Rouhani contradicts this claim, saying, “We in Iran today have a problem called an economic recession; today, we in Iran have a problem called an inappropriate business and work environment.”
